Anthony Legnani, a 1951 graduate was a three-sport athlete. He was co-captain of the football and basketball team. The basketball team lost in the State finals to Tourtellotte. The 1951 basketball team with a record of 18 and 3 established the best record any Berlin team had ever compiled during Berlin’s 16 years in athletic cycles. He was also a member of the 1950 baseball team winning the Central Valley C Conference with a 9 and 0 record and played in the state tournament ending with a record of 11 and 2.

At graduation he was awarded the prestigious Richard E Patterson Jr. Memorial Award and the Babe Ruth Foundation Sportsmanship Award.

After graduating he went on to play fast pitch softball and basketball in the famed New Britain Industrial League.

In 1953 he served his country in the Korean War in the Army. He was stationed in Okinawa and played basketball and fast pitch softball for the Rycom Ordinance Team. His softball team was the defending Army/Okinawa champion.

After he returned to Berlin in 1955 he played for many area fast pitch softball teams. He spent three years as an assistant coach at St Paul’s Middle School where in 1983 they had an undefeated season going 32 and 0 and winning the State and New England championship titles.

Now, at the age of 76, he enjoys playing in the bocce league, weekly golf outings with friends, and his regular daily three mile walk.
