John Steurer

John Steurer graduated from Berlin High in 1980 where he was a 3-year starter on the men’s varsity basketball and baseball teams. In baseball John was captain in his senior year and was selected to the All-Northwest Conference team. He led the Redcoat pitching staff in his senior year with a record of 6-2. He was the winning pitcher for Hall of Fame coach William “Bill” Gibney’s last varsity coaching win at BHS. He led BHS baseball to their first Northwest Conference Championship in 21 years which was also the first NWC Championship for Hall of Fame coach Paul Baretta. In his 3 years of basketball at Berlin he was captain in his junior and senior years and an All-Northwest Conference selection. He led all scorers in his senior year.  In 1979 John scored 25 points leading the Redcoats in their win over Plainville High to capture the St. Paul Christmas Tournament and was voted MVP capturing Hall of Fame coach George Hall’s 100th career win. Also, as a junior he was invited to play in the Connecticut High School All-State game playing on a team with All-American Rod Foster from St Thomas Aquinas.

After graduating John went to Western New England University where he was a two-year varsity starter on the basketball team and a four-year starter on the baseball team. In basketball he led the team in foul shooting at 88.5% as well as in 1981 was selected to Springfield Mayor’s Tournament as a first team selection.   In baseball at Western he was a two-time captain and led Western to its first NAIA District 5 championship and school record for most wins finishing 20-14 his senior year.  He posted a 5-3 record with a team high 50 strikeouts in 54 innings and posted a 2.32 ERA, 2nd in NAIA District 5 his senior year. John was selected as NAIA District Player of the Year in 1984 as well as selected to the NAIA All-East area team.  Western New England baseball pitching staff, with Steurer leading the leading the way led the country with NAIA lowest ERA in 1982 and 1984 John represented United Baseball Federation as US player in the Netherlands in 1984, pitching and playing for Club Terrosvogels, Haarlem, Netherlands.

John was inducted into Western New England’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He is a retired Executive Vice President for Acosta Sales and Marketing and resides in Westborough, MA with his wife Charlene.
