Steven Gentile

Steven Gentile graduated from Berlin High in 1989, where he was a four-year starter on the varsity baseball team and a three-year starter on the football team. In baseball, he started 66 straight games where he batted .335 as a sophomore, .444 in his Junior year, and .395 as a Senior. He was a pitcher and outfielder. He was a Northwest Conference All-Star selection twice and was selected in his senior year to participate in the State’s All-Star game.

In football, he was a three-year starting linebacker, where he recorded over 200 tackles, leading his team as a senior with 99 tackles. He recorded 17 tackles in the Championship game against Morgan. In addition to linebacker, he also played tight end, running back, and on special teams. He was a team captain in 1989 and an All-Northwest Conference selection.

During his two-sport varsity athletic career, the teams combined for a record of 84 wins and only 15 losses. The football record was 26-6 and baseball 58-9. The teams won five Conference Championships and were in three State finals, with one Championship. The 1987 football team suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss in the Championship game against Morgan.

Steven went on to play baseball at Mitchell College and Western Connecticut State University. His brother Scott is also a member of the Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
